Italy: Montepulciano and Pienza

On Friday we went to Montepulciano and Pienza.  We saw the Montepulciano Duomo and the church above Montepulciano called Madonna di San Biagio and went to a wine tasting at Cantina del Redi, a wine cellar built in the 1300’s. And yes, Montepulciano is where they filmed the Volturi scenes from New Moon, in case you couldn’t tell by the many Twilight themed menu’s and souveniers all over the city.  The main piazza and the wine cellar were both locations for the movie, as our tour guide kept telling us, and we ran into a mom and daughter who had been to the real Volterra prior to Montepulciano on a bit of a Twilight tour.

After Montepulciano we headed to Pienza where we toured the tiny town and its Duomo, as well as tried some of the cheese they are famous for (it was delicious!).

The weather has gone from a sunny 70-80 degrees to an often rainy or cloudy 60-70 degrees, as you might be able to tell from the clouds.  It’s a good thing though, because Tuscany was going through a bit of a drought and the Arno River is now in much better form (for me personally though, having come from rainy Washington, this is not something particularly exciting).
